Dear friends in life and in ministry  . . .

Pat and I spent the weekend in the beautiful (if rainy) setting of Stella Maris Retreat Center on Skaneateles Lake. Our diocesan Bishop Matthew Clark led about 110 deacons and spouses in our annual retreat. It is always a great blessing to be in the presence of this holy and gentle apostle. But this occasion was indeed special. Over two days, three sessions and two Eucharistic liturgies, the bishop demonstrated the wisdom and prayerful countenance that have endeared him to this diocese.

People today can be vicious in their treatment of their leaders and some will find that "religious" people can often act in very unchristian ways. Bishop Clark has been targeted by some for his very pastoral approach in shepherding his diocese.  Throughout his 25 years as spiritual head of this diocese he has truly been a Christ figure to me and all who know him - endured the sufferings that come with leadership with grace, humility, prayerfulness and faith.

This week in the parish we will celebrate two of my favorite Feasts  -  All Saints and All Souls. At St. Mary's we hold a memorial Mass on All Souls day and especially invite family members of those who loved ones have gone to the Lord during the past year to join us.  As the names of the deceased are read, family members come forward to light a candle in remembrance.

My column this week includes some poems and prayers submitted to me by parishioners.

Have a joyous week.

Deacon Ray

Over the years, God has blessed me with many wonderful opportunites to minister.  As a Roman Catholic permanent deacon of the Diocese of Rochester, New York, (ordained 1982), I have served in a wide variety of ministries. Whether I am ministering to my parish, hospitals,  nursing homes, prisons, travel or retreat groups (e.g. Cursillo, Walk to Emmaus, Koiniania, Pre Cana, Youth) - music has played an important role in opening doors and hearts.
This website is an extension of that ministry. Here you'll find the lyrics to many of my prayer-songs and, if you like, purchase from a collection of CDs I've recorded. There's also information about tours and pilgrimages that my wife Pat and I occasionally host and links to web sites I've found interesting.

I pray that you will enjoy this visit, and if you like,
